Responsibilities

The Materials Engineering and Microfabrication directorate is hiring students for summer internship positions.  The directorate incorporates a number of technology areas including: Microsystems/Nanosystems Development, Product Engineering, Biomedical Microsystems, Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, and Material Processing and Fabrication. 

Students selected to work in the directorate will be expected to work full-time during professional business hours.  Students will be expected to work with multiple senior technical staff members and communicate effectively both orally and in written memos or presentations. The technical responsibilities will vary depending on the project assignment, which is tailored to the student skills and the Draper supervisor’s needs at the time the offer is made.  Examples of technology areas in the directorate include:

 

Microsystem and Nanosystem Development

  • Design, study and analysis of a broad range of MEMS/NEMS technologies
  • MEMS development and packaging
  • Wafer-level processes and packaging
  • Multi-chip modules
  • Various attachment and substrate technologies

Product Engineering

  • CAD modeling and floor planning
  • Product mechanical design and analysis
  • Thermal, stress, and material analysis
  • Managing low-rate production build activities

Biomedical Microsystems

  • Develop and implement cell- and tissue-based in vitro model systems
  • Develop and execute laboratory research plans that support project goals and milestones
  • Experimental design, assay execution, troubleshooting, and data analysis for studies that involve cell-based model systems
  • Culture and maintenance of cell lines in standard culture and on novel platforms and substrates
  • Design and execution of biochemical, molecular, and microscopic assays to monitor cellular viability, differentiation, and function

 

Qualifications

Student must have a BS in a relevant field such as mechanical engineering, materials science, electrical engineering, biological/biomedical engineering, physics, biology, mathematics, etc.  Student should provide evidence of high aptitude and academic performance.  Evidence of research experience is preferred.
