Responsibilities

The students selected to work in the Secure and Reliable Software Division during the summer will perform software engineering tasks in support of the development and testing of cybersecurity technologies. Students will be expected to work with multiple senior technical staff members and communicate effectively both orally and in written memos or presentations. The technical responsibilities will vary depending on the project assignment, which is tailored to the student skills and the Draper project lead. Current opportunities in advanced cybersecurity research topic areas include:

  • Cyber Resilience Technologies
  • Reverse Engineering
  • Vulnerability Analysis and  Exploitation Development
  • Memory Protection mitigations (e.g. defense against ROP)
  • Secure Hypervisors
  • Artificial Intelligence as applied to the Cyber domain
  • Trusted Computing

 

Qualifications

Student must be enrolled in a degree program in a relevant field such as computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, etc. Student should provide evidence of high aptitude and academic performance. 

Depending on the specific project assignment, the skills that are helpful for many in this area may include those listed below.  Students are not expected to have every skill listed.

  • Strong C and  C++ skills
  • Experience with x86
  • Experience with debuggers such as IDA Pro or GDB
  • Knowledge of linux and/or Windows kernel internals
  • Knowledge of Trusted Platform Modules (TPM)
  • Experience writing exploits
